Last Month's Highlights

Monthly update and I am LATE!

Let's go! In our juniors tournament five players faced off in a giant round robin. The final match decided first and second place. First going to Aarav and second to Rutvij! Karun and Abi took 1st and 2nd at the U1500 event in Princeton. Jimmy took 2nd place in his division at the Montgomery County Senior games and Nick took 1st in his division. More about THAT later. And Tim won Frank's No Let tournament, defeating Girish in the Final!

The Montgomery County Senior Games are held each year and are open to all. You don't need to be a resident of Montgomery County. So keep an eye on the calendar to enter next year. The table tennis event is held at the Montgomery County Community College and is weekday, daytime event. That is probably why I was the only entry in the 50-59 category! I don't work most mornings, so was able to participate and get to my regular job at Noon. I did bring Janel along and told the organizers that she could be my opponent. If I lost, no medal.  Don't worry, she didn't take it easy on me!

We are holding the State Open Championships on Saturday July 17th. The Open and Over 40 events are full. However, I reserved a final spot in each event to be determined by a wildcard tournament. That tournament will be held June 21st at 9:30am. You must register at Omnipong to participate. The wildcard spot for the Juniors event has no entries. Hey if you are the only one entered, you get into the main event un-contested! The Women's event has only 3 of a possible 8 participants. Let's go ladies! If you are afraid of crushing everyone, never fear, it builds character! If you are afraid of getting crushed, hey you can still say "I played in the state championships!" and it builds character!

Thoughts from the shower: Coaching advice.

  • You can practice your strokes, but you should also practice the power attenuation of your strokes. 100% power, 80% power, 10% power. Can you execute the same shot at all these levels? A change of pace may win you points if power cannot.
  • Getting in position for your shot begins before you opponent hits the ball. Once YOU hit the ball, move to the most common return area while watchin the opponent. Are they setting up to push? Are they going for a forehand or backhand? What is their pattern? Adjust your movement and location to the best spot to counter what they are ABOUT to do.
